FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1: IF THE RACE STARTS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, CAN I FLY IN ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD?

We recommend that you travel on either Monday or Tuesday, November 1st or 2nd so that you can enjoy a day of relaxation and acclimatization at Jacó Beach, where the event starts, in order to get used to the heat and familiarize yourself with the terrain. Official registration will take place in the REGISTRATION ZONE at the Croc’s Casino Resort in Jaco Beach on Wednesday, November 3th from 9 am to 5 pm. Arrange your transfers and lodging before the race at: TBD

2: IF THE RACE FINISHES ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH, CAN I FLY OUT ON THE MORNING OF SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH?

a) You can travel home on November 7th and spend the night at our official city hotel where your bicycle will be given back to you at the hotel´s basement storage area by La Ruta race organization from midnight on November 6th until midday on November 7th. Please contact info@spartanlaruta.com to purchase your hotel reservation.

b) All bicycles must be picked up by racers from the hotel’s basement storage area by midday November 7th.

3: IS LODGING ON THE NIGHT BEFORE THE COMPETITION INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION PRICE?

No. All hotel reservations are add-ons or may be purchased through the hotel separately. The first night is located at Croc's Casino Resort, Jacó Beach on Wednesday, November 3rd.

4: IS LODGING ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 7TH INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION PRICE?

5: WHAT DO I DO WHEN I ARRIVE AT JUAN SANTAMARIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, IN SAN JOSÉ?

Go directly to the venue of the race: Croc's Casino Resort in Jacó Beach. You can arrange transportation by contacting our Adventure Concierge at info@spartanlaruta.com or selecting it as an add-on when registering.

6: WHAT DO I DO WITH MY BIKE BOX AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT DOESN'T FIT IN MY RACER BAG?

a) Our Adventure Concierge Service will help you organize the storage of your bicycle box, as well as any other additional equipment that you won't be taking along with you during the race, at our BAGGAGE AREA (opens on November 3rd from 9 am to 5 pm) at the Croc's Casino Resort next to the REGISTRATION ZONE. La Ruta organization will transport your bike box and extra luggage to the official city hotel in San José, where it will be kept safe for the 4 days or more that you will require. To purchase this service please contact info@spartanlaruta.com or select as an add-on when registering.

b) However please remember that you will be responsible for your bicycle and equipment during the days prior to the competition.

7: WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE AT JACÓ BEACH?

You must arrive at Jacó Beach, specifically at the official hotel, Croc's Casino Resort, on Wednesday, November 3rd at the latest before 5 pm.

8: WHAT HAPPENS ON WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3RD?

You should go to the race REGISTRATION ZONE located at the lobby of the Croc's Casino Resort in order to collect your racer kit and a bag, sign the disclaimer and purchase any last minute additional service that you may require.

9: WHAT SHOULD I TAKE FOR THE THREE DAYS OF COMPETITION?

a) You should only take what will fit in the official racer bag (Dimensions: 12” x 14” x 28” / Volume: 4988 cu. in.).

10: WHICH MEALS ARE INCLUDED IN MY REGISTRATION FEE?

You may purchase meals as an add-on when registering.

11: HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY BICYCLE FOR EACH DAY?

a) You should have your bicycle ready for any type of surface. This means making any necessary changes the night before: tires, chain, rims, etc. We will only transport CLEAN bicycles during the competition so if you do not have the energy to clean and prepare your bike after each day.

b) You may add-on the upgraded bike services that includes bike cleaning and tune up or purchase each separately while registering. You can purchase this service as an Add-On if you choose the Original registration option.

12: WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND THAT I TAKE WITH ME FOR EACH DAY OF THE COMPETITION

a) Camelback (obligatory)

b) Energy bars, gels, powders, etc

c) Sunblock

d) Insect repellant

e) Small towel

f) Cape or Rain Jacket for Day 2

g) GPS

h) Oil for your chain

i) Flashlight

j) Goggles and cleaner

k) Competition gloves

13: WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE ON DAY 1?

It will be very hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius; it may rain and will definitely be very muddy.

14: WHAT CAN I EAT AND DRINK AT THE CHECKPOINTS?

The menu consists mainly of a variety of special savory snacks, fruit, sandwiches, cookies, hydrating liquids and some gels.

15: WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T REACH ONE OF THE CHECKPOINTS BEFORE IT CLOSES?

a) La Ruta organization will have a sweep truck which will collect you and take you to the finish line. Competitors must board the sweep truck or be subject to disciplinary action.

b) If you are competing as part of a group, please ensure that the whole group remains in touch with each other. If one of your group members goes missing, please inform a member of the organization at any checkpoint as soon as possible by dialing the emergency number on your bike number plate or bracelet on your wrist. If you decide to abandon the race you must inform a member of the organization crew at the checkpoint closest to you.

16: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I REACH THE FINISH ON DAY 1?

a) Hand your bicycle over to the Mechanics Service, a member of La Ruta’s crew will direct you to the different services available.

b) You should collect your kitbag in the designated area. You will be able to take this bag to your hotel and hand it in at the start line the next day.

c) You will be able to take a shower.

d) You can have a massage if purchased.

e) You can have lunch if purchased.

f) You should then board the official bus which will take you to one of our partner hotel locations.

17: WHERE CAN I HAVE DINNER ON THE NIGHT OF NOVEMBER 4TH?

You can dine at your hotel or nearby, where you will find plenty of options.

18: WHAT TIME SHOULD I BE READY FOR BREAKFAST AT THE HOTEL ON NOVEMBER 5TH?

Breakfast will be served at 3 am

19: WHAT TIME DOES THE TRANSPORTATION TO THE START LINE DEPART ON NOVEMBER 5TH?

It departs at 3:45 am

20: WHAT TIME DOES THE COMPETITION START ON DAY 2?

At 5 am

21: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE AT THE START LINE ON DAY 2?

a) You should hand in your kitbag in the designated area.

b) You should locate your bicycle and join the starting lineup.

c) You should wear a Leader's Jersey if you won your place.

22: WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON DAY 2 OF LA RUTA?

You should prepare yourself to climb some very high and difficult mountains where you will encounter a significant drop in temperature. It may rain.

23: HOW MANY KILOMETERS IN DAY 2?

80 km (approx).

24: WHAT TIME WILL THE BUS PICK ME UP FOR THE RAFTING ON DAY 3?

From 5-6:30 am. Is the pick up time for the rafters. This will depend on the location of your hotel in Turrialba.

25: WHAT SHOULD I TAKE WITH ME FOR THE RAFTING SECTION?

You should dress comfortably.

26: WHAT DO I DO WITH MY RACER BAG ON DAY 3?

Whether you are participating in the rafting or not, you should hand over your kitbag to one of our crew in the designated room at the hotel.

27: IF I AM NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE RAFTING ACTIVITY, WHAT TIME DOES THE BUS LEAVE THE HOTEL FOR THE START OF THE COMPETITION IN SIQUIRRES?

The bus will leave from the lobby of your hotel at 9-10 am depending on the location of your hotel in Turrialba.

28: WHAT TIME DOES THE CYCLING SECTION START ON DAY 3?

After the rafting, the cycling section leaves from Siquirres at 1 pm

29: WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON DAY 3 OF LA RUTA?

a) You should be ready to deal with intense heat and humidity. In addition, if you choose to participate in the Rafting section of our race (optional) you should prepare yourself to navigate the River Pacuare, which has class 3 to 4 rapids.

b) The bike section is very fast and traverses very hot jungle sections as well as banana plantations.

30: IS RAFTING INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION FEE?

No, this activity can be purchased through our registration platform. Rafting is a much recommended and an amazing experience which is entirely optional for participants and their companions. You can purchase this through our Adventure Concierge; info@spartanlaruta.com

31: HOW LONG DOES THE AVERAGE COMPETITOR TAKE TO COMPLETE DAY 3 AND HOW MANY MILES DOES IT COVER?

This stage will take an hour and a half to two hours of very fast riding covering approximately 34 miles.

32: WHAT TIME WILL THE AWARDS CEREMONY START IN LIMÓN?

Around 3 pm.

33: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE AT THE OFFICIAL HOTEL IN SAN JOSÉ ON DAY 3?

You can collect your bicycle from the designated area in the basement of the hotel between 11 pm and 1 am or the next day between 5 am to 12 pm.

34: WHEN SHOULD I COLLECT MY BICYCLE AFTER THE COMPETITION?

a) Bicycles will be returned at Limón (in the case of competitors who have decided to spend time relaxing on the Caribbean coast; this should be arranged before the start of the competition) or at the official hotel in San José on the night of November 6th (between 11 pm and 1 am) and November 7th between 5 am and midday, in the basement of the hotel.

b) *Any bicycles left after this time will be guarded by the hotel security.

35: HOW CAN I GET TO THE AIRPORT FROM THE OFFICIAL HOTEL IN SAN JOSÉ ?

You can obtain this service by adding it on in the registration platform or contacting our Adventure Concierge at info@spartanlaruta.com.

36: WHAT HAPPENS TO COMPANIONS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THE COMPANIONS PACKAGE DURING THE COMPETITION?

Companions can follow the competitors in official La Ruta buses as far as the checkpoints which can be reached by vehicles. They then will join the competitors at all the finish lines.

37: HOW CAN I OBTAIN PHOTOS OF THE COMPETITION?

38: WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF COMPETITORS?

500 For the 3-Day La Ruta, 300 for La Siesta.

39: WHAT IS THE DAILY TEMPERATURE VARIATION?

a) Day 1 is the hottest and can vary between 20C and 40C, felt temperature.

b) Day 2 is the coldest and can vary between 20C and 10C felt temperature.

c) Day 3 is the most humid, with up to 98% humidity, above all at the start time of 1 pm.

d) We definitely recommend sleeves against the sun and that you wear sunscreen at all times; also good goggles and a dry napkin to keep them clean in a zip-lock bag.
